This month, we’re doing something a little different: We’re having our monthly meeting — Saturday, Oct. 11 — on Bainbridge Island!

We know, many of you have to ride a ferry to get there, but the restaurant at which we’re meeting is an easy walk off the ferry (ferry schedule here), so you can park in downtown Seattle, and go on foot from there through a charming small-town retail district.

We’ve got great guests lined up for an event we’re calling BLOOD SPATTER AND OTHER COOL STUFF — a must for anybody seeking to authenticate the procedural portions of their crime-fiction storytelling. It takes place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Roosters Café, 123 Bjune Ave. SE. It’s a short walk (or taxi ride) through downtown Winslow off the ferry. (You can also drive up on Highway 16 to Highway 3 from Tacoma if you’re coming from the south, or take the Edmonds-Kingston ferry and drive 25 minutes to downtown Bainbridge if you’re coming from the north.)

Our guests:

George Johnston is the Public Information Officer for the Washington State Patrol’s Forensics Crime Lab Services, which includes the crime labs in Seattle, Tacoma, Marysville, Spokane and more. He teaches forensics classes at the University of Washington.

His wife, Jean Johnston, is a DNA specialist with WSP and was credited with much of the research that resulted in the arrest of Gary Ridgway, the Green River Killer. Jean can explain what’s possible—and impossible—with DNA and the state and national CODIS System, the DNA database.

RSVP through our Mystery Writers of America-Northwest Chapter Facebook page or our e-mailed Evite invitation. We hope you can make it, and we promise any extra effort it takes to get there will be worth it.

Please note: Non-MWA members are asked to pay $10 at the door.
