October Meeting: Sheriff David Rood

29 09 2011

On Saturday, Oct. 8, the Northwest Chapter will meet at Duke’s Chowder House, Southcenter, Tukwila, at six p.m.  Guest speaker, David Rood, was on the small police force in Astoria, Oregon from 1975 to 1988.   Attaining sergeant, he saw it all from murder and rape to injured dogs.  In 1988 he joined the police dept. of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, outside of Port Angeles, WA.  As its only officer, he was default Chief of Police.  The dept. grew to eight officers in his eight years there.  “Lots of tales to tell,” he says of his career.

So please register if you are planning to come (simply click here and register – it only takes 30 seconds) and come mingle with other mystery fans and writers, eat good food, and enjoy a visit with David Rood.

September 10th: MWA Coming to Portland to Honor Margolin & MBTB

20 08 2011

Hey Portlanders, we’re coming to town!

On Saturday, September 10th, the chapter will be heading to Portland to award our third annual Willo Award, the award named after Willo Davis Roberts, and honors those which make exceptional contributions to the Northwest mystery writing community.  This year’s recipient is none other that Phillip Margolin, one of most popular and successful mystery writers in the Northwest.

In addition to our award, the MWA/NW chapter board will be in Portland, OR to present the “Atta Mystery Bookstore Award” to Murder By The Book (MBTB) bookstore.

We’d love for members of MWA NW, friends of Phil Margolin, as well as Murder by the Book fans to join us Saturday, September 10th to celebrate Phil and one of the best bookstores in the Northwest. Pat Harrington and the rest of the board of MWA will be coming to town, as well as many other MWA members.

The day’s agenda looks like this:

5:30: Gather at Murder by the Book (at 3210 SE Hawthorne Blvd.) and award an “Atta Mystery Bookstore Award”.

6:30: Walk around the corner to Bazi’s (at 1522 SE 32nd Ave) and have the Willo Award Dinner for Phillip Margolin.  Pat Harrington will MC and the format will include a schmooze/drink, dinner and a small awards ceremony.

That’s it. See the links above for directions.  If you do plan on attending, please quickly RSVP here so we have an idea of how many are attending. Tickets are free and RSVPing takes all of two minutes, so please do so if you can!

Once again, we look forward to seeing you on September 10th in Portland!

May Meeting: Detective Susana Ditusa

19 04 2011

Looks like we’ve got another great speaker lined up for May with Detective Susana Ditusa, with Seattle Police Department’s Special Assault Unit.  Detective Ditusa focuses on sexual assault and child abuse cases, and is planning to discuss some of her cases and what led her to a career as a police detective.

The meeting will be on Saturday, May 14th from 6-8 PM at Duke’s Southcenter.

So, if you want to hear from a Seattle Detective and have some dinner and drinks with fellow mystery writers, make sure you make it this May.

See you there!

April Meeting: Karla Stover and Frances Snyder

2 04 2011

Ever wondered how to poison someone with a plant?  Thought so. We are mystery writers after all.

So then, you’ll not want to miss this month’s meeting, entitled “Please Don’t Eat the Daisies . . They’re Poisonous”

Our speakers, Karla Stover and Frances Snyder, will give a history of plants being used since early days to current times in real life and mystery stories to “do away” with folks.  Sometimes this was accidental, and of course, some deliberate.

This is a powerpoint presentation in color that also shows some “famous” gardens dedicated to just growing poisonous plants and open to the public in England and America. Karla and Frances will also have note cards featuring some of the plants, pretty ones, available for modest cost.

So, details:

Where: Dukes Chowderhouse, Southcenter (map here)

When: 6-8 PM, April 9th

Who: Poisonous plant experts Karla Stover and Frances Snyder

It’ll be a fun time kibitzing with fellow mystery writers and learning about poisons for your next (or current!) novel. See you there!

Bill Farley, Winner of 2010 Willow Award

19 12 2010

On Sunday, December 12th, the board of the Northwest chapter of Mystery Writers of America descended upon Seattle Mystery Bookshop to give Bill Farley, founder of the legendary bookstore and hero to northwest mystery writers (and mystery writers in general) the 2010 Willow award.

As many of you know, the Willow Award is named in honor of the memory of two-time Edgar Award Winner and long-time Northwest Chapter stalwart Willo Davis Roberts. The intent of the award is to honor an author or member of the mystery community who has contributed with distinction to the Northwest mystery writing scene, and as anyone with a nodding familiarity of the northwest mystery community can attest, no single person has done more to push the cause of mystery writers in the Northwest than Bill. Since launching his bookshop in 1990, Bill and the rest of the Seattle Mystery Books staff have hosted hundreds of mystery writers from all corners of the globe and has been a vocal supporter of many writers from around the northwest.

As is usually the case with Bill, he didn’t want to make too big a fuss over himself, choosing to receive the award at work. We couldn’t think of a better place to bestow the award.

While we as a community can never repay Bill for all the hard work he has done on our behalf, we hope this award shows, in some small measure, how thankful we are. So please welcome us in congratulating Bill Farley, winner of the 2010 Willow Lifetime Achievement Award.

Reserve Your Spot Now: First Annual Willow Award

18 10 2009

Get out your black ties and your best dresses, the Willo Award is coming!

In honor of the memory of two-time Edgar Award Winner and long-time Northwest Chapter stalwart Willo Davis Roberts, the Board of Directors of the Northwest Chapter has instituted what it hopes will become an annual event: the selection of an author with significant ties to the Pacific Northwest to be the recipient of the “Willo”: the Willo Davis Roberts Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award.

We on the Northwest Chapter Board are thrilled to announce that the inaugural recipient of the Willo will be none other than Seattle’s own J.A. Jance!

Although J.A. Jance is literally someone who needs no introduction to the members of the mystery-writing community, here’s a bit about this year’s recipient from her website:

“J.A. Jance is the top 10 New York Times bestselling author of the J. P. Beaumont series; the Joanna Brady series; three interrelated thrillers featuring the Walker family; and Edge of Evil, the first in a series featuring Ali Reynolds. Born in South Dakota and brought up in Bisbee, Arizona, Jance lives with her husband in Seattle, Washington, and Tucson, Arizona.”

And of course no self-respecting award would be much of an award without having a party to celebrate it. And no self-respecting party of this sort would be much of a party without the right master of ceremonies. And the Northwest Chapter is pleased and proud to announce that none other than renowned Northwest mystery writer G.M. Ford has graciously agreed to serve as the M.C. for this year’s event!

Below are the details. If you’re interested in attending, please RSVP to the following email address: willoaward@yahoo.com

MWA Northwest’s Christine Cook/Lou Kemp Is On a Roll!

3 07 2009

Our own Christine Cook (who writes under the name of “Lou Kemp”), whose short story “Sherlock’s Opera” was recently included in the Curt Colbert-edited SEATTLE NOIR (Akashic Books) is really on a roll short story-wise. Celebrated mystery/spec fiction crossover author Charlaine Harris, editor of MWA’s 2010 Anthology (tentatively entitled *Blood Lust*, and available from Tekno Books in April, 2010) has tapped another of Lou’s short stories for inclusion in this anthology as well!

A description of the story from Lou herself:

“The story is called, In Memory of the Sibylline and it is set at sea in the early 1800′s. Probably the best way to describe the story is to say that the protagonist would test your definition of good and evil. He murders, yet he saves, and he has a unique sense of morality. The galleys arrived today from the publisher. I haven’t seen so much red ink since I ran over a fountain pen in my driveway.”

Won’t you please join me in congratulating Olympia author Lou Kemp on the major coup!
